The phlebotomy technician program trains students to obtain blood specimens by way of venipuncture and microcollection techniques. The phlebotomy technician training program classes also teach students to collect and process other clinical specimens. Students will acquire direct hands-on experience in class, lab experience and clinical externship. Phlebotomy students are taught to complete important tasks such as:
- withdraw blood from patients and blood donors
- maintain the privacy of patients during various procedures
- verify patients’ identities to ensure proper labeling of blood
- properly label specimens testing or processing
- enter patient data and information into databases
- learn to process specimens for testing
Graduates of this training program are eligible to take the NCCT examination to in order to obtain national certification as a certified phlebotomy technician. Graduates are also eligible to apply for positions as phlebotomists and/or phlebotomy technicians at hospitals, clinics, blood banks, physicians offices, plasma collection centers, or in independent laboratories.
The phlebotomy technician training program at Legacy Healthcare Careers is approximately four weeks long and allows students to keep their full time jobs while they attend classes. In addition, all courses are taught and supervised by experienced phlebotomist instructors who possess relevant training and real-world experience in the specialized medical field of phlebotomy.
Employment of phlebotomists and phlebotomy technicians is projected to increase by 25 percent through the year 2026, which is much faster job growth than the average for all occupations according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
